More than 85 people applied for every vacancy at a new Tesco Express store opening in Exeter.

The store received over 700 applications for eight new jobs.

Tesco interviewed and recruited staff from the local area to work in the new store, on Sidwell Street, to bring a community feel to the store.

Store manager, Angela Rice and her team promoted the new jobs online - with positive results which led to all vacancies being filled by local people.

Angela said: “I was thrilled by the response we received to our recruitment drive. There were so many great applicants which made the decision very tough when it came to selecting the successful eight.

“My new team and I are looking forward to offering shoppers a clean bright and spacious new store with fast and friendly service. We want to make this very much a local store for local people.”

Store opening hours will be seven days a week from 6am until 11pm, and for added convenience the store will have a free cash machine, National Lottery counter, self-service tills and mobile top-up facility. In addition to a bakery, beers, wines and spirits.

There will also be a Click and Collect service where customers can order online from Tesco Direct, and pick up in store – everything from buggies to bikes.
