WORK is under way on a new retail and trade counter development in the heart of Exeter's commercial zone.
The £4.5m Alphington Retail Park Scheme is being developed by Eagle One on a site adjacent to Sainsbury's superstore on Alphington Road.
The centre will include four units with planning consent for bulky goods retail and warehouse/trade counter floor space, and 74 parking spaces.
Two of the units, totalling 33,000 sq ft have been pre-let to Belron UK, trading as Autoglass.
The other two retail units are to be speculatively built, after planning permission was granted last year.
Depending on the type of retailers which move on to the site, a total of between 50 and 100 jobs are expected to be created when they are open for business.
Contractors Midas Construction expect to complete the project in June.
Michael Bryant, development manager with Eagle One, said: "What sets this commercial development apart is its superb location.
"It is close to one of the main roads in and out of Exeter, which is the financial and shopping hub of the region, and is only minutes from the A30 for access to Cornwall and the South of England and Junction 31 of the M5 motorway for Bristol, London and the North.
"It is also well served by public transport into the city.
"Alphington Retail Park's location offers huge visitor potential. It is a gateway to Exeter's Marsh Barton Trading Estate, one of the region's largest commercial estates with more than 500 businesses including car dealerships, builders' merchants, plant and tool hire businesses and also abuts Sainsbury's newly refurbished 90,000 sq ft superstore."
The remaining retail units are 4,600 sq ft and 8,900 sq ft in size, and are currently being marketed by joint agents Alder King and Macarthur Wilson.
