Cully looking to improve for trip to rivals

CULLOMPTON coach Chris Wall is confident some tweaks in training this week will have paved the way for a win at Sidmouth in Saturdays' derby.

Cully slipped up 19-12 against unbeaten leaders North Petherton last time out – at first glance a respectable result.

Wall said the players did not see it that way and were determined to make the minor adjustments needed to turn a narrow defeat into a win.

"It is something that dogged us most of last season when we were very difficult to score against, but didn't score enough points of our own," said Wall.

"In the last 10 minutes we picked up, but when you are behind it is pressure rugby trying to catch up.

"There are things we can work on – cleaner ball away from the breakdown for one – and conceding fewer penalties.

"It is a long time since Cullompton have won at Sidmouth, but we feel we can go there and get back on track."

Cullompton were handicapped by the absence of winger Lee Powell and prop Andy Issac, both of whom should return at Sidmouth.

No. 8 Sam Harris should be match fit again after returning to the fray against Petherton less than 100 per cent.

"Sam had been in the United States with his job for two weeks and flew back on the morning of the match and went straight into the game," said Wall.

All Cullompton's points against North Petherton were kicked by Ross Toms.

Penalties and how to avoid them will have been on the mind of Sidmouth coach Jason Luff after his side's 24-19 defeat at Cleve.

It was Sidmouth's fourth defeat in a row and ninth in 13 starts this season. Only a whopping 12 bonus points from the best attacking record in the division is keeping the Green Machine away from the drop zone.

Luff scored Sidmouth's only try of the game. Dan Retter converted it and added a drop goal and three penalties as well but their cause wasn't helped by a yellow card for Neil Barrett.
