It was an open and shut case for police after a woman was seen with “blood” dripping from her car boot – until they found it was a broken bottle of cough syrup.

Grandmother-of-five Pat Major said she was shocked to be stopped by officers on suspicion of having a dead body in her car. The 60-year-old was spotted by a bystander in an Asda car park stuffing something into her boot before driving off in a Nissan Micra.

The shopper followed Mrs Major as she drove away in Newton Abbot, Devon, before spotting a red liquid leaking from the boot and calling 999.

Devon and Cornwall Police received a call from a woman on January 19 at 5.25pm.

“It was initially reported to us by a lady who said she was following a car which, she said, appeared to have blood pouring from the boot,” a police spokesman said. “The car pulled into an address in Newton Abbot and the occupant of the car got out and went inside.”

When officers arrived at the property, they discovered the liquid was blackcurrant cough mixture and the blood-soaked body was squashed bags of shopping.

Following the incident Mrs Major, a housekeeper at Ashburton’s Dartmoor Lodge, said she saw the funny side of the mix-up.

what a stupid title. why have they printed Dripping body in boot' in Newton Abbot was squashed shopping bags. The title ans says dripping body in boot when below the title they immediatly contradict what they said on the title. THats falsely titling a story just to get attention. Totally false title and mis leading. Some idiot has basically typed some text on a computer screen and uploaded it on here. why have they evn said body in boot when it was not an occurence. Its pretty distasteful to make up things like this. the blood-soaked body was squashed bags of shopping is printed. thats very poor use of english. how on earth is a bag of shopping classed as a body. why are they even saying such nonsense. why are they talking fantasy nonsense about a bag of shopping. what kind of desperate fools would make a story about nothing. THat is just sad. pathetic

She was lucky she didn't get shot in the head eight times before she had time to be questioned.

The Police said they were glad they didn't have to do anything or arrest anyone as that sort of thing was usually too much trouble for them but they recorded it as a crime solved anyway as it looked good on the government statistics.
