The final 49 Comet stores shut up shop for the final time yesterday as the high street chain became the latest high-profile casualty.

The closure of the final outlets from the former 235-strong estate came seven weeks after Deloitte was appointed administrator

Among those to close yesterday were branches in Exeter, Plymouth and Torquay.

Events surrounding the chain's collapse are to be examined in a fact-finding exercise by the company investigations branch of the Insolvency Service. It will cover the run-up to administration and Comet's takeover by a private equity-backed investment vehicle in February.
