Network Rail said the liquefied mud slip disrupting services between Teignmouth and Dawlish was contained by the retaining fence, but the force of the slip snapped the retaining cables. Around 200 tonnes of mud had been held back by fencing that was previously erected to prevent bank slips on to the line.
A railvac machine may be capable of sucking some of the mud out.
At Cowley Bridge Junction work is continuing to restore the line between Exeter and Taunton.
