Golf round-up: Laurence Taylor wins seniors roll-up at Downes Crediton

Downes Crediton

THE winner of the seniors’ roll up was Laurence Taylor with a score of 33 points, while Brian Johnston came second just a point behind.

Seniors Stableford: 1 L Taylor 33pts, 2 B Johnston 32pts, 3 M Conder 31pts

The ladies played a three clubs and putter individual stableford competition, which was won by Rickie Pawsey with a score of 29 points. Three players finished on 27, with Fran Shrubsole edging out Lyn Parry and Angela Battershall.

The men’s individual stableford division one winner was Cyril Dawes with 40 points ahead of Martin Garnsey on 38.

Andrew Jackaman was division two winner with 42, ahead of Jack Cross on 38. The score of the day came in division three, where junior member Josh Hill recorded a 48 points.

New club captain John Sampson knocked defending champion Jimmy Heard out of the men’s winter foursomes at Tiverton on Saturday.

Sampson teamed up with Dave Milton to defeat Heard and his new partner Lee Arthurs.

Duncan Floyde, Ray Pratt, Peter Anthony and Andy Ogden posted 121 stableford points to win the four-man team event on Saturday. Mike Cottrell, Tony Lavery, Heath Ellis and Mark Sangster finished second with 108, pipping Ollie Main, Brian Phillips, Ricky Baker and Matt Watts on a countback.

Chris Bacon, Teresa Birchmore and Liz Hall carded 62 stableford points over 11 holes to win the ladies’ yellow ball competition on Wednesday.

Janice Haynes, Christine Norton and Julia Cole came second while Maureen Postles, Marian Stevens and Shirley Ward were third.


Dave Bickle, Alan Stokes and Alan Searle hit 80 points to win division one of the three-ball stableford competition.

In second place, with 78, were Mike Hern, Matt Mills and Paul Ayris.

They beat third-placed Matt Soby, Will Searle and Paul Prouse on a countback. Division two was won by Kevin Harding, Roger Slack and Steve Browne, with an excellent 83 points.

Matthew Flavin, John Flavin and Richard Goodger were second, with 79. Third, with 77, were the team of Richard Johnson, Chris Hurley and Dennis Edwards.

Fingle Glen

Terry Webster hit a six-under-par to win the first Saturday stableford of the new year at Fingle Glen.

It gave him 42 points, which was three ahead of the nearest challenger.

Second, third and fourth places went to Chris Hazelwood, Luke Burchell and Steve Burchell, who all scored 39.

In division two, Steve Taylor came first with 39 points, beating Les Drew on a countback.

Woodbury Park

Matthew Smith won the three clubs and a putter competition at Woodbury Park with 52 points.

It put him six shots ahead of Paul Crocock in second, who pipped Richard Jenner on a countback.
