Update: Two injured in 'massive pile-up' caused by freak hailstorm on A380 near Exeter

A hailstorm has caused traffic problems across Exeter this morning.

A multi vehicle pileup in a hailstorm on the main A380 Newton Abbot to Exeter road caused traffic chaos across the region

Early reports suggest that there was as many as 20 cars involved in the south-bound collision.

There were also reports of a crash on the Teign Valley road as drivers struggled to cope with roads turned treacherous by the sudden downpour.

Police said they were called to the scene of a ‘massive pileup’ on the A380 southbound at 8:55am today.

The original call was regarding a collision towards Newton Abbot from Exeter involving at least 10 cars.

Ambulance crews were also sent to the scene as two people were injured in the collision.

Crews where then called to another collision involving two cars in the tailbacks caused by the first incident.

Police have confirmed they are also dealing with another collision on the northbound road towards Exeter.

One driver said: "The road just turned into a skating rink in seconds. People just couldn't stop."

He said: "There were an awful lot of vehicles at the side of the road.

"People were just wandering around trying to work out what happened.

"It didn't look as if anyone had been badly hurt."

Traffic is building up on the A38 and A380.

The road is now open both ways.
