Industrial units were evacuated and part of a Westcountry town was cordoned off after a fire broke out in a gas main.

Police and firefighters were called to the Broadmeadow Industrial Estate in Teignmouth shortly after 9am yesterday after the gas pipe caught light.

Crews set up a cordon at Bishopsteignton Road, evacuated nearby commercial premises and requested assistance from gas transporter Transco following the fire. Two appliances from Teignmouth and one from Torquay were sent.

A spokesman for Devon and Cornwall Police said: "It appears that the main has fractured and resulted in the fire.

"The scene is surrounded by industrial, rather than residential units."

Diversions were set up by police but the leak had been plugged and pockets of fire extinguished by 1pm, allowing crews to leave.
