ENVIRONMENTAL inspectors found rat droppings and a dead rat in an Indian restaurant, a court has heard.

The eatery has been prosecuted for breaching food hygiene regulations.

The Taj Mahal and its manager Sultan Al-Mahmood, were both ordered to pay a total of nearly £7,000 in fines and costs following a court hearing.

The court said that both the company and the manager responsible for the restaurant were equally at fault.

Mr Al-Mahmood said that a new operator will be taking over the running of the Teignmouth restaurant, which has been renamed Essence Restaurant.

In addition, he promised a number of improvements to hygiene, including significant spending on the structure of the building.
