Environmental Health officials have been called in to investigate whether rotting produce left in a now closed Exmouth greengrocers could pose a health hazard.
Stokes in the Magnolia Centre closed suddenly on January 10.
The business was taken over independently at the end of 2010 when the nationwide firm went into administration.
It is Exmouth’s only greengrocers. A repossession notice is on the window.
When the shop shut last week some produce was not removed and complaints were made to East Devon District Council about the smell.
An authority spokesperson has confirmed that it will take action if it becomes an environmental health issue.
Town councillor Steve Gazzard has raised concerns that some staff had not been paid for some of their work. “It’s a great pity, I hope new owners will come along to take it over and the staff will have the option of keeping their jobs. It’s always been extremely busy and for Exmouth to be without a main fruit and veg shop is a great shame.”
