A regular running event in the grounds of the historic Killerton House has been canclled "due to worsening ground conditions".

Killerton parkrun has made the difficult decision to cancel its 94th event on Saturday.

From Saturday February 16, the free community running event held at Killerton National Trust estate near Exeter will be temporarily relocated to a drier 5k route in neighbouring Ashclyst Forest.

Killerton parkrun sees nearly 100 runners every Saturday of the year set off across the historic parkland at 9am and this is the first time the event has been cancelled since it launched three years ago. Despite Killerton countryside team and parkrun volunteers trying to find alternative routes to keep the 5k event in the parkland, the cross-country course has suffered months of persistent rain, floods and snow and is showing no signs of drying out.

Helen Trebble, Killerton community access officer said: "Our dedicated volunteer marshals and loyal 'parkrunners' turn up each week whatever the weather and we owe a huge thank you to them for continuing to support our event. Sadly the slippery ground conditions are such that the safety of our runners, volunteers and spectators is in question.

"Our runners do take part at their own risk; however should there be a serious incident the ground is now so wet that it would prove difficult for an emergency vehicle to gain access quickly and safely. Our parkrunners safety always comes first.

"We will not let the weather beat us! This Saturday's cancelled event will allow our team time to relocate Killerton parkrun to Ashclyst Forest, just a 5 minute drive from our usual start location. It is a beautiful woodland trail following stony off-road paths leading off from the free National Trust Forest Gate car park on the Killerton estate. The event will return back to the parkland in good time for the Killerton parkrun third anniversary celebration in April."

Forest Gate car park is the main National Trust woodland car park in Ashclyst Forest, off the B3181 Exeter to Cullompton Road. Grid ref: SX999995. The nearest postcode for Sat Nav is: EX5 3DT.
