The Amateur Boxing Association was formed in 1880 and held its first championships the next year. It first appeared at the Olympic Games in 1904 and, apart from in 1912, it has always been a part of the them since.
In amateur boxing, the primary objective is to score points. A blow that knocks a boxer to the mat receives no more credit than a regular blow.
The number of rounds, up to four, and their lengths can vary although typically there are four rounds of two minutes each.
For safety, fitted mouthpieces are required and must be worn at all times in amateur boxing, with boxers using 10oz gloves for all weight classes.
