South West quartet all chasing Tour cards

Some of the region's top young professionals are set to tee off the second stage of 2013 PGA European Tour qualifying in Spain today.

A total of 309 players compete over 72 holes over the next four days with the aim of qualifying for final stage at the PGA Catalunya Resort in Girona later this month.

Teignmouth's Billy Hemstock, Saunton's Jon White, St Mellion's James Ruth and Truro's top Welsh ace Rhys Enoch – touring professional at Celtic Manor – are among those hopefuls competing after safely navigating through first-round qualifying.

The South West quartet are set to compete at the four separate Spanish qualifying courses. Hemstock begins his final stage bid at Campo de Golf El Saler in Valencia; Enoch at Las Colinas Golf and Country Club in Alicante; White at El Valle Golf Resort in Murcia; and Ruth – who won through to final stage last winter – at Lumine Golf and Beach Club in Tarragona.

The European Tour Qualifying School has been held at the end of each season since 1976 to establish which players – not otherwise exempt – will play on the Tour the following year.

In the region of 1,000 competitors enter each year, all aiming for a European Tour card, awarded to the top 25 and ties following the final stage.

Devon professional Kevin Harper, from Exeter Golf and Country Club, finished third in the Jamega Pro Tour winter series competition at Burnham and Berrow on Monday after carding a 75.

David James and Cumberwell Park's Steve Surry tied for top spot on 72 to finish three ahead of Harper, who was 31 last Friday.

Mullion has been awarded the 2012 Cornwall Golf Mark club of the year.

Cornwall Golf Development officer Simon Wood said: "PGA professional Nick Martin has introduced over 80 adults into the game. Nick has been nominated for a Cornwall Sports Award as participation coach of the year."

The Cornwall Golf Partnership and West Cornwall Golf Club have also been nominated for awards at Friday's county awards night in Newquay.

Sunday, November 11: Bude v Tehidy Park (Perranporth, 9.45am), St Austell v Looe (Lanhydrock, 11am), Porthpean v Truro (St Austell, 10.30am), Lanhydrock v Budock Vean (Truro, 9am), Trevose v Whitsand Bay (Carlyon Bay, 8.58am).
