EVERY autumn and winter brings darker nights and greyer skies which, on the plus side, allow plenty of room to highlight colourful interiors.

This year, the richness and luxuriousness of the colour plum is oozing its way into homes in a range of forms, from scatter cushions to full kitchen refits with many of the main retailers heavily featuring the shade.

From deep damsons, plummy purples to dusky lavenders in subtle transparent glassware or rich statement velvet-clad sofas, the versatility of this jewel-like hue is the perfect interior colour to take your Devon home from autumn right through to the tail-end of winter.

Tesco has opted for cushions in rich Chenille textures of deep damsons and statement lampshades in reddish purple tints which serve as the perfect, affordable way to add a touch of subtle, fashionable colour to your home.

At the other end of the consumer spectrum, John Lewis, are featuring a range of fully-fitted kitchen units in bold, warm plums alongside cute vintage preserve cupboards which are perfect for storing those home-made festive chutneys. Alternatively, these small wall-mounted magenta cabinets could be placed in any hallway or bathroom to add an autumnal aura to the room.

On the bathroom front, there is a whole host to choose from here, with Catchpole & Rye featuring a sumptuous freestanding Le Bain du Bateau bath in plum and Villeroy & Boch announcing a "Loop" mounted washbasin in deep purple.

But, if making structural changes in the name of fashion isn't on the cards, simply choose from a range of textiles from rume, Berry Red, Sofa.com, and JAB Anstoetz; a variety of rich toned tableware from Villeroy & Boch and Berry Red; and luxurious but cosy lighting from John Richard at Interio to give a subtle nod to the trend.

Alternatively, make a statement without having to refit a kitchen or bathroom by adding a moveable piece of furniture or papering a feature wall with Arthouse's vintage, twilight floral wallpaper which will add a hint of autumnal/ winter decadence to any room.

Our favourite pieces of plum furniture this week are the Rama & Sita console from the French Bedroom Company - the perfect addition to any family hallway; Paisley Fox's purple Rococo mirror from Etsy, inspired by a childhood favourite; and rume's sumptuous Smithfield sofa in purple velvet.

Whatever the budget, wherever the home, there's something in the plum trend for everyone which will help take the most private or public parts of your home through the autumn/ winter transition.
