A 40-year-old woman from the Exeter area is fighting for her life in hospital after falling from a cliff in Sidmouth last night.
Police had spent time talking to the woman before she fell at around 7.40pm.
Police have confirmed that she had been reported missing with concerns for her welfare shortly before the incident.
She was airlifted to Southampton General Hospital by the Portland Coastguard helicopter with serious injuries including suspected spinal, leg and pelvic trauma.
Sidmouth Lifeboat was tasked to assist after the woman fell from the cliff, half way along Jacobs Ladder beach.
An ambulance and two rapid response vehicles were called to the location at 6.30pm. And a cliff coastguard crew were also on scene.
A lifeboat spokesperson, said: “Weather, wave, and surf conditions were not suitable for recovery of the casualty by lifeboat, who had suspected spinal injuries and had suffered considerable trauma.
“Portland Coastguard helicopter was tasked to complete a winched stretcher casualty recovery.
“Sidmouth Lifeboat was retained on standby.”
