A section of the M5 in Devon has been completely closed following a serious collision between a camper van and a car.

Both the southbound and northbound carriageways of the M5 have been shut near Cullompton after the red Volkswagen Camper van, which is registered to an address in London, and silver Vauxhall Tigra, registered to Exeter, collided at around 1.35pm.

Devon and Cornwall Police said the camper van was travelling northbound when it veered into the central reservation and across onto the southbound carriageway before colliding with the Tigra.

Both drivers of the vehicles have sustained serious injuries and are trapped in the vehicles.

Fire crews are at the scene and are currently trying to free the casualties. The Devon Air Ambulance has landed on the motorway and will take the injured to hospital shortly.

Police said several motorists had stopped at the scene to help after witnessing the collision.

One driver caught in the tailbacks said: "It is awful here.

There are several ambulances on the scene so I think people must be hurt. I counted at least seven police cars.

It is a major incident and I would think we are in for a long wait here. Police are walking between the jammed cars now talking to drivers."

The road is currently closed between Junction 28 (Cullompton Services) and Junction 29 (A30 Exeter).

Police said the motorway is likely to remain closed until at least 2.45pm.
