Police have confirmed that a 71-year-old man was stabbed at a Sidmouth hotel last night and a weapon has been recovered.
A murder investigation is underway after a man died after the attack at the Black Horse Inn in the town centre at around 10pm.
Police have issued an appeal for people in Sidmouth who could help them with their investigation, to come forward.
Devon and Cornwall Police were called to the pub shortly after 10pm last night following reports that a man had been assaulted.
A 71-year-old man later was pronounced dead at scene.
A 41-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the death and is being held in Exeter.
Officers from the Major Crime Investigation team are at the scene.
An employee at the Fore Street hotel, who asked not to be named, said: "Everyone is pretty shook up about it."
The employee could not say where the dead man is from but did say that he had checked into the hotel earlier this week.
A police spokesman, said: “We believe this is an isolated incident.
"We understand news of this incident will be troubling for many in the Sidmouth area and to reassure local people there will be some extra officers on patrol in the town.”
