Surfboards made in Devon are featuring in one of the hottest pop videos on the market.
Super boy band One Direction go topless to show off themselves – and special boards made by Circle One of Crediton.
The five boys strip down to their swim shorts for the music video Kiss You.
James Trevelyan for Circle One said: “One Direction’s new video features our bamboo surfboards. It went live on youtube on Monday night and by Tuesday morning had already had almost 5 million hits.
“It was quite exciting that a local company is getting its products on a global stage!”
“We were aware a media company had sourced the boards from us but did not know if and in what capacity they would use them.”
In the film the boy band star in a variety of scenes inspired by classic films and bands from the fifties and sixties.
Standing on the Devon-made surf boards in front of a green screen Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan, Liam Payne and Zayn Malik attempt to body pop in a row.
Circle One was founded in the late 1960 by Jeff Townsley of Exeter who started by making boards for himself and his friends copied from US Surf magazines.
But all the while Jeff was testing new designs, materials and production techniques. And so Circle One was founded in 1969 in Exeter.
By the late 1970s, Jeff employed 18 staff making surfboards in Exeter, and had started making wetsuits as well. The manufacturing side of the business had overtaken the retail side, so Jeff eventually closed the shop.
In 1979, the business moved to its current home on the Lord’s Meadow Industrial Estate in Crediton.
Over 30 years on the brand is synonymous with technological innovation and craftsmanship..
While embracing cutting edge production methods, the Circle One wetsuit patterns are still hand drawn by Jeff and every board being hand shaped and hand finished, some under his watchful eye.
