Weekly Exeter street food market will taste sweet

STALLHOLDERS at the Exeter street food market said they cannot wait until it becomes a weekly event.

From March 22, the popular market will be held every Friday at the Guildhall Shopping Centre.

Sally Grigg, who runs Burrow Hill Farm with husband Neil from the Killerton Estate near Broadclyst, specialises in Red Ruby beef and other locally-sourced food.

Mrs Grigg said: "We started doing these last year and built up some regular customers. Our steak burgers are probably our best sellers."

Hannah and Alastair James have just launched their business the Cauldron, which will be a weekly feature of the market.

Mrs James said: "We have always dreamed of running our own business. We love street food – it is a movement which is really growing – and this is the start of the dream for us."

Gustavo Lara, who runs the Mexican stall Tacho Macho, cooks up a range of delights including chili and burritos.

He said: "What people want to see is people making their food. A lot of the public don't know we are here. But the more people who come and then spread the message the more popular this will become."

Another stall which will be there every week is Buen Appetito, run by Andy and Debbie Todd, who live in Dawlish.

Mr Todd said: "We lived in Spain for a long time and love paella – now we are back in Devon we want everyone else to enjoy it too.

"We started our stall in the Guildhall last November and it is a real labour of love. The key is patience and caramelising the rice so it sticks to the bottom of the pan. That is the best part of it – it is a rice dish and everything else just goes around that.

"It is really good – we have regulars who come and visit as it is a really healthy meal which is value for money.

"Customers can see it made in front of their eyes, it does not get any fresher than that."

Ryan Bolton runs the Get Cupcaked stall with partner Charlotte Deeley.

He said: "We set up the business two years ago. I had been a chef for six years but then decided to start our own business. What sets our cupcakes apart is our unique flavours. One of our most popular is our American waffle cake.

"We are really looking forward to being here every week. It will be hard work but will be great for the business.

"We already have a good customer base in Exeter and eventually want to open our own café here."
