HOPING to inspire a new generation of potential West End performers is stage star Richard Dale, who has opened a new theatre school in Exeter.

His aim is to bring professional West End theatre training to the young community of Exeter, and prepare them for their journey into stage schools beyond.

For the last six years, Richard has enjoyed a successful career in London, and recently decided to return to Devon, where he is originally from, to pass on his experience to others.

The Richard Dale Theatre School, for nine- to 18-year-olds, opened this month and offers weekly sessions at the brand new Exeter Community Centre studios in St David's, Exeter.

Richard, 26, said: "Since graduating from top London musical theatre school Arts Ed, I have had a career in the West End performing in shows such as Hairspray and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.

"I have also sung in the West End with Gareth Gates, among others.

"In between, I have taught at drama schools in London and realised I enjoy teaching more than performing."

Richard has now achieved his dream of opening his own theatre school. The vocational course will focus on training to become the "triple threat", which means to become proficient in all areas of dancing, singing and acting.

Richard, who is hoping to put on the school's first showcase at the end of the summer term, said: "Being from Exeter myself, and having gone to a local dance school, I was never prepared for what was going to happen. I was very lucky to get into a drama school straight away, but I felt out of control as the standard was so high.

"To now have that knowledge and be able to bring it back and pass it on is great.

"I still have an agent in London so you never know if in the future I will be back in the West End, but this is what I want to be doing."

Anyone interested in joining the school, which is open to all abilities, will be required to take part in a small fun and informal audition, aimed at giving a taster of what a real audition could be like.

Sessions for juniors are held on Mondays from 5pm to 8pm, and seniors on Tuesdays at the same time. The cost is £5.75 per hour.
