Fire and ice extravaganza

IT might not have offered the full on costume extravaganza of previous years but the new show from Holiday on Ice has lost none of its high octane power.

A packed audience enjoyed the opening night of Speed at Westpoint, near Exeter, as some of the usual frilly frivolity was swapped for leathers and engine oil.

This is a harder and sexier show than the usual offering but none less entertaining.

It opens with a flurry – sparks, pyrotechnics, and of course dazzling skating – and never really stops.

It is based around the idea of speed and all the different areas it touches. At the start of each segment we are told by a pretty blonde, projected from a giant tyre at the side of the arena, what style of speed will be performed be it the Speed of Love, Nature, Thrill or Money.

And right through to the stunning finale, the line-up of professional showmen and women never missed a beat.

While the skill of the skaters is never in doubt, I must admit I did miss some of the fun. There were elements, like a circus section and a routine involving giant beachballs that were thrown into the audience, but it is a darker production.

The motorbikes on ice, however, were impressive, especially driving through a line of fire on the ice and jumping off a ramp.

Thankfully the finale had lost none of its razzle dazzle. With illuminated costumes, lights and full on spectacular and the over-the-top visual treat we have come to love from the Holiday on Ice team.

If you missed it at Exeter, it travels to Brighten and then Nottingham next.
